The Accident Compensation Corporation says it gets over 10,000 claims per year from dog attack victims.

There have been five serious incidents in the last fortnight, including two attacks on toddlers - all by pitbulls or mastiffs, or breed crosses.

ACC spokesperson Laurie Edwards says the number of dog attack claims is steadily increasing, and the figure may not include all victims:

Mr Edwards says the cost to ACC of dog attacks is around $4 million per year, and that doesn't include the wider costs of time off work, hospital expenses, and emotional scars.

katrina, it actually doesn't say these 10,000 incidents are from being attacks. Some will be from people running from the police and having the dogs set on them. Some will be innocent accidents of people playing with their dogs a bit rough. Some will be form people tormenting the dog and the dog protecting itself.

Chris I fail to see what part of this you find funny.
The fact it is costing ACC (tax-payers) lots of money
or the fact that people are being attacked? Neither of which is a laughing matter
