3News - 1080 being dropped from a chopper

1080 - good or bad?

Unless even more 1080 pesticide is used, New Zealand faces a future without many of its special plants and animals - according to Environment Commissioner Dr Jan Wright. Do you agree, or is there a better way to control New Zealand's pests?

This poison is a dissaster, and the sooner the government wakes up to that fact the better. It is well known that it kills more than pests by getting into waterways etc.

No, I strongly don't! Get more Kiwis to work for DOC to do the frontline job which 1080 is supposed to do. spread the work and divide the income between real people opposed to machinery (helicopters) and the pharmaceutical industry. Costs too high? then consider APPROPRIATE wages for all Doc staff, means close the gap between burocrats and front workers. That could see more passionate environmental Kiwis are getting involved to take care of their own country instead of sustaining an "elite" group of burocrats who have in their mind to rule over locals and have grandios, non-practical ideas. writing this I do have real people in my mind as examples!

It's the best we've got at present given the sheer scale of the problem. I feel for those who have lost loved pets (about 8 at last count), but I think the potential destruction of whole bird species is rather more important. It's another example of humans thinking that they are more important than other species - which is upsetting the whole balance of nature.

I think the Environment Commissioner should really get out and spend some time in the environment that she is apparently charged with overseeing. It was embarrassing to see such a lofty N.Z. official making outlandishly uninformed statements in public. Aerial 1080 broadcasting is indiscriminate, irresponsible, unnecessary, Cavalier, dangerous and anyone advocating it's continued use has no place in public office...that means you Jan Wright, you William McCook, you Niclola Vallance, you Ian Gill and you Nick Hancox...and many others. All eyes are on you and your devious spin...shame on the lot of you!

1080 has no species distinction... it will kill everything...
The E-Commissioner said trapping is labour intensive... Well there are plenty of people including myself that are unemployed in this country, why not give provide some work for your people?... I am also a hunter and have seen the effects of this poison on dogs and other animals it is not pleasent... Maybe she should step up to science and try some herself...
