1080 - is it damaging our environment?

Chris Short is dying to get his point across. With only a few weeks to live, he is more determined than ever that New Zealanders understand why 1080 should no longer be dropped on our forests. He wants you to see the damage it causes. But is he right? Are cows and horses and native birds really dying in their droves from ingesting the poison? Are we poisoning paradise?

Have a visit to a bush area where there have been 1080 drops. You will be amazed to see how much birdlife there is, and healthy trees. Maungatautari Ecological Reserve has 3 poisonings with 1080 Go and visit it if you get a chance. native birds need to be protected by pest control and 1080 is the best method where you are dealing with large areas. Anti 1080 ers don't care about native birds. They drink 1080 in their daily cup of tea.

Please check out the FULL STORY ' Documentry Warns of the Dangers of 1080'. The sign there, and at Forest entrys says "bait will be present on the ground after 19th February 2010". (our date here) What it doesn't say is but you may be showered in pellets from the sky on the 20th of February, Which is exactly what happened here to some people.

We can partly blame the animal rights campaigners for the huge possum explosion that the government is fighting with 1080. They forced the wearing of fur out of fashion by verbally and psychologically abusing anyone wearing a fur, even if the fur came from pests such as possums and rabbits. Remember how rabbits turned huge tracts of South Island farmland into virtual deserts? You can blame the animal rights campaigners for that too. I haven't seen what 1080 does (whether it does good or harm) so I can't comment, but there has to be a reason why most countries have banned it. Either these countries don't have huge pest problems like ours (hard to believe) or the stuff really is as bad as its detractors say it is.

I've been a bushman and hunter for a good part of my life. I love the mountains and bush more than I can put into words. From the bush I gather kai for my friends and family, but most days I just love staring at it in admiration.

I've heard DoCs side of the story, and I saw the documentry "Poisioning Paradise" by the Graff brothers.

I was around when DoC first started dropping 1080 in our area, Turangi/Tongariro national park. They lied back then about the true effects of 1080, and I beleive they're still lying now.

Yesterday evening I went out deerstalking. The weather was hot and humid so naturally I thought about taking a drink of cold water from one of the many available streams. However, I held off simply because I knew 1080 was in the area. This was a "lightbulb" moment for me. A moment when I realised, even more so than ever, what the downstream effects of 1080 are having on e.g. average Joe hunter out "enjoying" a harmless recreational activty. The fact that we cant, or are at least hesitant to, drink from one of natures "pure" streams because of the unkown long-term effects of 1080, surley should be enough reason to pull the pin on the filthey stuff!

There is always one thing above all when it come's to dealing with issue's that are debateable/political , wether it be climate change, war ect. And thats a thing called money!!. No matter what the issue is no outcome ever please's evryone becouse who's going to pay for it?. However there is always facts about every issue. These facts are, 1. 1080 works 2.1080 does polute our environment 3. spreading bait like napalm is reckless and polluting. So I say agree on a happy medium and keep both side's happy and come up with a win win situation where no one has to gain or loose money. Cause thats all anyone really cares about sadly these day's. good on ya nz!!!

Not so long ago I lived on a block in the Coramandel we had a number of 1080 drops, my first taste of this selective poison was the smell of dead animals in the bush, I must admit mainly possum, but then the wild pigs eat the dead and so the escape begins, we had flocks of rosella (also considered a pest) dead in our fields and the few Kiwi that existed then also disappeared along with many other species, we also took water from streams but because of being close to the forest blocks we distilled our water (to stop drinking copper sprayed on the forest) so the drinking side was not effected, though I must admit the water was effected as in the dam and the stream we found the fresh water cray had died along with frogs and fish, the first spray of the copper and the drop of the 1080 were close in time so I am unsure which created the major problem, though does it really matter which when the powers that be consider their efforts have been successful.

Our dog was put down thismorning.
The vet said nothing could turn back the effects of 1080.
We followed all procedures (live in the bush in Dunedin)
Henry died a slow and painful death as a result of toileting in our backyard.......10 meters from the front door.
The pest control guy talked in circles, and "it wouldnt have been that".....we have to live here and drink the water (water catchment on our land). This has to be stopped and i am willing to take any action and will join any movement! Whos keen?
