Clyde Graf, an anti-1080 campaigner, has previous bank robbery convictions

Tue, 01 Dec 2009 3:44p.m.
Hamilton film maker Clyde Graf, one of the family duo that claims the moral high ground in the anti 1080 campaign, has convictions for bank robbery.

He today apologised to his fellow campaigners for any "embarrassment" caused.

Graf and his brother Steve refer to themselves as "The Graf Boys" and achieved national recognition for their anti-1080 documentaries, A Shadow of Doubt and more recently Poisoning Paradise, which had its national premiere to a full house and acclaim at the Regent Theatre, in Hokitika.

However, the Greymouth Star has revealed that Clyde Graf and a third brother were sentenced in February 1986 to 10 years' jail for bank robberies in Brisbane, Australia.

The headline in the Brisbane Courier Mail at the time read 'Silly dream led to brothers being jailed'.

Clyde Graf is also a professional photographer, whose internet biography says he grew up in New Zealand's outdoors but now "hunts with a camera" photographing wild New Zealand creatures in their natural habitat.

He initially would not answer questions from the Greymouth Star this morning but issued a statement saying that he had been "young and foolish" when he committed the robberies and regretted his actions.

He was carrying an imitation pistol and said there was never any real threat of danger to the bank staff.

"I entered the banks alone, and no one was physically injured.

"It is important to note that my brother Steve in no way had anything to do with this crime.

"I thank family and friends for their support, and I apologise to all the people involved with the Poisoning Paradise project if I have caused embarrassment or offence."

He had accepted the probability that a higher public profile might lead to his past being revealed, but he went ahead anyway because the 1080 issue was so important to him.

"Because of my past, it would have been easier to have ignored the project, and ignore the information that was revealed. However, I stand by my decision to produce, with my brother Steve, the Poisoning Paradise documentary.

"This in no way changes my determination to fight the use of 1080 in our country."

The Grafs have in the past been highly critical of the Animal Health Board and Department of Conservation, but neither organisation wanted to comment on the new revelations today.

It's far enough to attack the person with the conviction, especially if you're without fault your self - but be very careful about slandering some one else - in this case, Steve Graf. He had nothing to do with bank robbery 25 years ago, and has no criminal conviction what so ever. This 1080 issue is about corruption, and crimainal behaviour at a high level, and if a burried past must be exumed, so be it - but know that the pushers of 1080's day will come.

Amazing, Government people supposedly in power to represent the interests of 'the people' commit crimes everyday and get away with it. These guys have paid for what they did or what has been alleged. DOC, the Animal Health Board, the Environment Minister etc, etc have not. If there was one shred of credibility to what they are doing to the environment, the economy and to the supposed 'clean green image NZ has, then they need to be honest regarding the figures relating to the fatalities of the non targeted species. New Zealanders who care need, to spread the word to various concerned institutions around the World. After all there is only 1 country (us) and 1 State (USA) that use it (1080). Leave the Graf boys alone theyr'e doing a good job.

This makes no logical sense to me. When someone does something wrong, is convicted and serves time, our justice system and general ethics ask that we be generous enough to forgive and help that person to move on. It's my belief that a healthy community would be pleased about this person feeling strongly about an important issue that affects us all, and that we should support their ability to voice an opinion and make a contribution to their society. Surely it does nobody any good to continue to punish and repress people who admit they have done wrong.

Well said Patricia. Bonnie and Clyde Graf is a perfect tag for them. They are so good at deception that they have even deceived themselves into believing their own propaganda and the borrowed statements from imported/irrelevant overseas scientists. A leopard doesn't chage its spots, just its habitat.

Hang on a minute. The people in the bank/s thought his gun was real and people who have watched the anti-1080 propoganda think it's real ... and that's OK? Both the people in the bank and the viewers of the Graf's propoganda were traumatised - the people in the bank had reason to be. It would appear that Bonnie and Clyde Graf are nothing more than artists of deception.

Oh Great so if one man has a conviction it means DOC can poison the whole country guilt free??? I'm sure there are plenty of pilots and others invloved in dropping 1080 including DOC staff who have convictions. So why would trust them? This goes both ways.

Any paper or tv station who carries this story is complicit in blocking public education about an extremely serious threat to human health in NZ. This story is just an example of a typical "sliming" technique; it may be "true" but Graf's long ago and petty crime is NOTHING compared to the crimes against nature and humanity being perpetrated by DOC and Min.of Health in their irresponsible and massive use of 1080, universally banned and known to be carcinogenic and endocrine disruptor, which creates infertitlity in humans. Have a look at NZ fertility and cancer rates. And you're worried about about a petty 'bank robbery' with a fake gun from 23 years ago? Today we KNOW what crims banks are.
