A Baghdad court has sentenced eleven Iraqis to death for their roles in a series of deadly attacks that rocked the country's capital last year.

Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar says a Baghdad criminal court on Thursday found the defendants guilty of financing, planning and participating in the August 19 bombings that devastated the foreign and finance ministries.

The blasts killed more than 100 people.

Bayrkdar says the convicted have a month to appeal the death sentences handed down with the ruling.

The attacks were a major blow to Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who is seeking to bolster his security credentials ahead of crucial March elections.
