Eleven people have been treated after being exposed to toxic fumes from a chemical spill in South Auckland.

A 200 litre drum of the chemical propyl acetate was spilt at freight company Retko about 9pm last night.

Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus worked for several hours to clean it up.

Ambulance staff treated 11 people who had immediate exposure to the chemical.

“Ten of the patients have inhaled the chemical and one patient has had some exposure to his skin,” says St Johns medic Rob Aupin.

Three people were taken to Middlemore Hospital.
