A 12-year-old girl is in a serious condition in hospital after catching fire while sniffing petrol in south Auckland today.

Northern Fire Service spokesman Tony McDonald told NZPA a 12-year old girl had been sniffing petrol and caught fire in east Mangere about 8.30pm today.

"A friend of hers apparently dragged her to a water source to put the fire out. The fire crews arrived at the scene and found her to be in status two, meaning serious condition."

Mr McDonald said the badly injured girl was taken to hospital, presumably Middlemore.

Fire investigators and police are investigating the incident.

Its sad that a kid of such an age is in such a situation. It would seem that the parents, or guardians have a lot to answer for.
