Chinese state media is reporting that 129 people have been killed and more than 800 hurt after a protest by members of a Muslim ethnic group turned violent in the country’s Western Xinjiang region.
It was reported earlier that crowds in the region’s capital overturned barricades, attacking bystanders and clashing with police.
The official Xinhua news agency says the death toll “was still climbing” from riots that erupted on Sunday.
