A Porirua girl could have permanent scars on her face after being attacked by her family's dog.

The 18-month-old girl underwent surgery on Saturday after she had been attacked by one of the family's three pitbull-staffordshire cross dogs in her backyard.

The dog was seized by council staff and was expected to be destroyed, the Herald on Sunday reported. The other two dogs remained at the property.

The girl had significant injuries to the right side of her face and stomach.

The attack came after a three-year-old boy was critically injured after a relative's dog bit him on the throat as he was eating chocolate in Ashburton on Wednesday.

He had surgery in Auckland's Starship Hospital on Saturday and was returned to the paediatric intensive care ward in a serious but stable condition.

The Porirua girl was the fourth child under five to be attacked by dogs since December 22.

Police said they would decide whether to lay charges after meeting with Porirua City Council officials on Monday.

It is time and long overdue for these types of dogs to be banned and no longer bred anymore. It is my view that these would be classed in the wild animal category and not to be housed at home as a so called 'pet'. These types of dogs aren't considered pets but rather for fighting, protection against the so called 'negative forces' and competition. Are these dogs more precious than our children who cannot defend themselves from vicious aniamls such as these? People who own the vicious dogs don't have an understanding of what fear these young children can be under while around these dogs. How much longer will it take for our children to suffer?
