A Jewish cemetery in Auckland has been desecrated overnight with swastikas and anti-Semitic statements scrawled across the gravestones.

More than 20 graves were attacked at the Karangahape Road cemetery. Graffiti on one grave reads “don't f*** with us”, and another says, “f*** Israel”.

The attack is thought to have occurred overnight.

The President of the New Zealand Jewish Council, Stephen Goodman, told 3 News the cemetery had been targeted before, but this was a severe case.

“It’s usually wanton vandalism but this is a different case,” he says.

A spokesperson for the Auckland Council says the offensive graffiti will be cleaned up this afternoon.

The council hopes security cameras operating at the cemetery will help catch those responsible, and police have called an investigation into the vandalism and are appealing for information.

Jewish graves in Makara and Whanganui were targeted nine years ago, and the graves in Auckland have also been damaged before, but previous cases were put down to simple vandalism.

The Jewish Council wants better security immediately – a move that may scupper the local board's previous plans to tidy and open up the whole cemetery.

Shale Chambers, chair of the Waitemata board, says the issue will be reviewed.

“Another view is to close it off and to put fences around and this will obviously lead to a review of what's the most appropriate way to go, especially for the Jewish quarter section.”

No-one has claimed responsibility, but the attack did happen on the eve of a day the extremist National Front call ‘Flag Day’, when they plan to march to Parliament.

It is with a heavy heart that I identified one of the stones that was vandalised as that of my great-great grandfather during a news clip tonight. Such acts are borne of ignorance and stupidity.

Can't abide racism or people who think the use of symbols of hate is an appropriate means of public discourse. I do have to laugh that some on here while rightfully deploring the racially motivated vandalism have then destroyed their own argument by automatically assumming the vandalism was carried out by immigrant groups - really? Are some of you on here actually trying to suggest there is no racist underbelly in New Zealand? The use the "88" symbollogy is synonmous with filhty pro-facist white supremacist organisations in the UK, US, Europe & Australia - New Zealand also has its fair share of moronic racist tools like any other country. Its not something that just happens overseas. The fact it occured on the National Front's sad self appointed "flag day" is too much of a coincidence. What a bunch of hillbilly rednecks.

Many of my ancestors and relatives are buried here and I'm hurt and upset by the wanton act of vandalism. These people were among the early founders of New Zealand and some of the earliest European settler arriving as early as 1838, as my family did. They interacted and traded amongst the Europeans and Maori. Some marrying into the Maori whanau. They became accepted and celebrated. Instead of vandalising their graves and vilifying their lives these miscreants should be celebrating what the Jews did for our country.

@FRANK and BILL. What Israel does in the Middle East is try and survive amongst its enemy neighbours. Being surrounded by terror organisations on all fronts is no joy. Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, Hamas and Islamic Jihadists in Gaza and the same in Sinai in Egypt. Israel is much like NZ in it's Western mentality, and they have to resist the radical Islam operating in their region- an example of which we saw in Libya a few weeks ago. Don't be ignorant and buy what some "peace activists" (Israel haters) tell you about Israel. Go visit. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah has said he would rather "all Jews gather in Israel" so that they don't have to "go after them around the world."

I still cant quite figure out why some people hate the Jews (and I'm no idiot). I know some people accuse them of killing Jesus, or they are too successful in business, or whatever. All lame reasons anyway. What gives?

This is heartbreaking for all the families with ancestors in this cemetery, mine are buried here too. These are some of the first settlers in Auckland and they need to be protected, come on council get off your arse's and do something about protecting them.
