Production is underway on a Kiwi-made 3D feature film about Sir Edmund Hillary's conquest of Mount Everest in 1953.

Beyond the Edge, produced by Matthew Metcalfe and written and directed by Leanne Pooley, will document Sir Ed's epic climb to the top of the world's highest peak.

The film will use original colour footage and photographs from the time, as well as dramatic recreations.

"It is an honour to produce a film about one of New Zealand's greatest heroes and bring this epic tale to the big screen," Mr Metcalfe said.

The film has the blessing of the Hillary family, while the Royal Geographical Society in London is allowing access to photographs and other materials from the expedition.

The search for an actor to play the part of Sir Ed is about to get underway.
