Born in Goa, India, Siona Fernandes is a classical dancer and has a master's degree in psychology. Now she's representing her adopted country of New Zealand at the Olympics in the sport of boxing – quite an achievement considering she only moved to New Zealand in 2008 for a holiday, and only took up boxing two-and-a-half years ago – for fitness.It wasn't until the start of this year Fernandes realised that going to the Olympics could be a reality.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Along with Alexis Pritchard, becoming one of the first women to represent New Zealand at the Olympics in boxing.
  • Won the sole Oceania wildcard berth for her respective weight class – flyweight.
  • Competing at the 2012 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China in May.
  • Being ranked 12th in the world in her weight division.
