Former NRL player Greg Bird’s conviction for cutting his girlfriend Katie Milligan’s face with glass has been thrown out on appeal by Judge Michael Finnane today.

Milligan sustained cuts to her eye and a broken eye socket in the incident that occurred at Bird’s flat in August last year.

In June Bird was sentenced to a maximum of 16 months in jail with a mandatory eight months to serve as a result of the incident.

Today the judge agreed that an “agitated” and “irrational” Milliagan’s injuries were accidental, after she lunged at Bird with a glass in her hand website leaguehq.com.au reported.

The former Cronulla Sharks player Bird was released on bail in June after being charged and then lodged his appeal. He now plays in the Super League for the Catalan Dragons.
