At least 70,000 fans are expected to travel to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

According to two top Australian sporting travel agents, New Zealand hotels are charging too much – which is putting Aussie fans off. They say room rates have skyrocketed by as much as 600 percent.

Bruce Robertson, chief executive of the Hospitality Association says Australians have double-standards.

“I think this is all a bit of an Australian beat-up really,” he told TV3’s Sunrise programme this morning.

“It’s a bit cheeky coming from the Australians – who charged the exact same sort of rates during the Olympics and last World Cup.”

Mr Robertson says the examples the agents are using are extreme cases and, given the popularity of the game, the prices are reasonable.

“That was exactly the sort of prices that the top Sydney hotels were charging during the Olympics so, at the top end of the market, that’s certainly not unreasonable,” he says.

That’s been backed up by the official ticket and tour partner of the Australian Rugby Union.

The Independent Chair of the New Zealand Hotel Council, Jennie Langley, says she will talk with her members to set clear expectations of what they can and can’t charge.

The council says if any hotels try to charge exorbitant rates they run the risk of ending up with empty rooms.

Who gives monkeys about this rugby BS?
I hope to be out of the country when all this c##p is going on.
The Rugby Union want public money put into this venture and they say that it will benefit everyone. So far as I see, it is only going to be a very small minority who do while the rest of us have to pay!

I have to laugh at Sneddon's comments that 55 million dollars of accommodation has already been booked. Not hard to work that out. The hotels for the teams, that would take about 2/3rds of it, and the rest will be IRB officials and Sponsors. It will also include all the dicks from the NZRU.

Has anyone Tried Room4Rent.co.nz, people are putting their houses and rooms for rent for the Ruby world cup and cheap prices...?

This is disgusting. This is not the NZ I grew up in. I hope the hotels that are doing this lose money as a result. Hardly a nice welcome to the world cup. We don't deserve to be hosting it. Ba$tards.

tell the aussies to harden up ..... we went to Adelaide last year for the clipsal 500 and had to pay $450 per night while the racing was on and the next night after it was all over it dropped back to the normal $120 per night ... who's ripping off who?

Interesting that the Aussies are whinging about this given that when I went to the World Masters in Sydney last year the prices on most accommodation was inflated by 2-3 times ... maybe they would say the price was set by demand?
