3news.co.nz today entered uncharted territory by launching an innovative new service catering for New Zealand's Chinese community.

Each day a selection of stories on the website will be translated into Mandarin.

John Yu is one of seven Chinese students on the 3 News team translating news stories for Chinese readers here and in China.

"In Chinese policy they block some websites from overseas, and this one we try to do in a positive way so the Chinese can read it in China," says Mr Yu.

A similar service launched by the UK's Guardian website around a year ago was forced to stop when the Chinese government shut down the company doing their translations.

But 3news.co.nz chief editor James Murray says he's not concerned.

"As far as I hear, people can get the 3 News website in China without too many problems. I think the sort of stories that we are translating shouldn't cause too much concern for the Chinese government."

The Chinese will have access to New Zealand news on a mainstream website, but it's mainly aimed at the New Zealand Chinese community.

"I think all the statistics show that the New Zealand Chinese community is growing," says Mr Murray, "and until now there are no mainstream websites that serve any content in Chinese, and I just think this gives Chinese people a way to access news that affects their daily lives."

"I think it is better to have both ways," says Mr Yu, "New Zealand and China stories, so that can interest people in China."
