A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has rattled parts of Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in what is largely a sparsely populated area.

University of Utah officials say the quake hit just before 6pm MDT. The epicentre was about five miles east-northeast of Randolph in Rich County.

Randolph is about 73 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. People in the state capital also reported feeling the temblor, and Idaho and Wyoming reported some shaking.

A dispatcher with the Rich County sheriff's office says the quake was strong enough to shake pictures on the wall.
