The Earthquake Commission says it began taking calls just two hours after the earthquake hit on Saturday.
It has now received about 5,000 claims - of those, 600 are for property which is completely uninhabitable.
The commission says this is just the tip of the iceberg – it is expecting at least 100 thousand claims, and it is warning that aftershocks and poor weather could mean more damage is yet to come.
