Phil Goff has been in politics for 30 years

By Duncan Garner

Fewer than two in every 10 people think Phil Goff can win the next election, according to our latest 3 News Reid Research poll.

And it is not much better if you ask just Labour voters.

One in three Labour voters now thinks it is time for Mr Goff to stand aside as leader of the party.

Mr Goff has tried everything in opposition.

Dusting off his old motorbike, playing the race card, proposing a capital gains tax on housing, taking GST off fruit and veges, giving a $10 a week tax cut to everyone, and opposing foreigners buying our land.

Yet still voters are overwhelmingly saying the 30-year veteran cannot win the next election.

In our latest 3 News Reid Research poll 78 percent of voters said he cannot win.

Just 16 percent said he can.

But it is not much better amongst his own believers - more than one in two Labour voters have lost the faith.

Fifty-six percent say he cannot win and just 37 percent of his own voters say he can.

But Mr Goff is trying to stay positive.

Labour is trailing National by 25 points in our latest poll, and Mr Goff is on track for a humiliating defeat.

So we asked Labour voters, should Mr Goff be dumped as Labour's leader.

- 30 percent say yes get rid of him – that is one in three of his own voters.

- 65 percent say leave him there

- 5 percent did not know.

Again we asked Mr Goff - why does he not stand aside.

One senior Labour MP told 3 News today the latest polls are “depressing and its dead man's territory”.

The same Labour MP told us there was a less than 10 percent chance of Mr Goff being rolled, because the caucus was gutless and no one was willing to step up and take responsibility.

But there are Labour MPs agitating for change, but there are not enough of them.

The same MP told 3 News that talk of replacing Mr Goff is only “chit chat” and nothing more serious than that at this stage.

Phil is a nice guy but not strong enough to manage the Red Brigade. The answer to our country's stalemate is good old Winston Peters. He has what it takes to survive stroms and he has done it. The media hates the fact that he has made inroads into so called minor ethnic communities. He was the only leader who got the biggest applause at an Indian community gathering of 3000 people. So much for a Racist politician image created by unbiased media.

If Labour does not win then we will be faced with national bankruptcy due to Nationals economic incompetence. An unsustainable deficit of 19 billion due to tax cuts for the rich; a 5.4 percent increase in the cost of living due to the increase in GST to 15 percent and to increases in government levies on petrol, diesel, lpg and vehicle registtration all imposed in a time of recession; the governments low wage policy for adults and youth that means businesses are now marginal due to the lack of disposable income for 90 percemnt of us and proposed asset sales that are likely to lead to an increase in the cost of power ,and travel, and which are short term fixes to offset a $50 billion deficit run up by this government; and a record 7 percent unemployment rate. What more do you need to know in order to wake up to the fact that Labour has the answers to getting us out of a financial mess whereas Nationals policies will ultimately bankrupt the country in which case we will all lose. We dont need a populist entertainer with brainless comments but instead need someone with brains, experience and thought out answers and that Phil Goff and the Labour party clearly have.

Goff isn't the only one at fault within the labour party - he lacks leadership skills yes but then so do the other idiots around him. None of them can come with any decent policies that can make any difference to our country in a positive way without getting us in the crappa'. They have been sitting on their chuffs getting paid stupid amounts of money doing nothing, sticking to their policy in real life getting the hand-out at the tax payers expence.
National have made blunders but only a few and have made some tough decissions that are turning this country around and getting us moving again - they are effectivly giving us a hand up instead of the old labour party ways of a hand out - this is positive in so many ways and if people don't like it then they should leave to some other hand out nation. Being motovated and positive people, making some sacrifices and tough decissions for the better is what is required to lead and no labour politican shows any signs of those attributes.

Labour lacks leadership, and leaders. The other big problem is that Labour can not easily shake its' past. Helengrad is still fresh in everyone's minds. Add to that the constant sniping and whinging and no-one bothers to listen anymore. National could say that cars have round wheels and some silly Labour minister would say "no they don't" - just to make a noise. Its that bad now for Labour.

Engage your brains. There is no conspiracy. No one would dare to pay off the media- if they did and it came out then the political party involved would disappear. The media are not responsible for Labour's miserable showing and poor Phil isn't either, he's just the leader of a Party that has lost its reason to exist. Labour is unlikely to recover ever- it no longer has relevance.
