$700,000 RWC budget hole worth it - Shadbolt

Mon, 24 Oct 2011 7:08a.m.

Ticket sales for the cup topped the $268.5 million goal set by organisers, with last night's final generating $50 million alone.

But it's left some in the regions out of pocket - like Invercargill City Council, which last week revealed the tournament cost the authority $700,000.

Nevertheless, mayor Tim Shadbolt says it's a cost he's happy to bear.

"Overall it's been a fantastic tournament," he says.

"It's got out into the provinces, it's had over 1000 events associated with it, and we should all feel satisfied that we've had a great time."
