A strong quake has struck New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands this evening.

According to the US Geological Survey, it happened at 8:55pm, measured at 7.1, at a depth of 26.5km. It was initially reported at a depth of 10km, but has since been revised.

The islands are just to New Caledonia's east, south of Vanuatu.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says: "Earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100km of the earthquake epicentre. Authorities in the region of the epicentre should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action."

No tsunami warning has been issued for New Zealand.
