Forget snow, it is huge waves hammering the Hawke's Bay coast tonight.

Houses built along the coast in Haumoana have already been hit by waves about five metres high.

Civil Defence is warning large swells of up to eight metres to hit overnight.

“It was a bit sketchy for a little bit but pretty used to it, hopefully it’s a good swell tomorrow so we can go surfing,” says Haumoana resident Gabe Walford.

Hastings District Council says residents in clifton, Te Awanga, Haumoana, Ocean Beach and Waimarama should be prepared to self evacuate if required.
