Still from A Prophet

Still from A Prophet

I feel like I've been banging on about this brilliant French prison drama for simply ages, and that’s because I have been.

A Prophet is the story of a young illiterate Arab called Malik, serving a 6 year sentence in a French prison. He hovers between two warring gangs, the Corsicans and the Muslims, belonging to neither, but slowly rising up the prison ranks regardless.

Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes last year, and nominated for an Oscar, A Prophet unfolds so gently and captivatingly, the sudden bursts of violence serving only to root this gripping story in a reality few of us could imagine.

Must-see cinema.
