A quarter of Kiwi adults want the traditional summer holiday period shifted to February, according to the results of a new online survey.
The survey, which was conducted for Tourism Bay of Plenty, asked more than 1000 people nationwide if they would prefer to move the summer break, including the school holidays, to February, when the weather is generally better.
While 24 percent of respondents said they did, 38 percent were against the idea.
The remainder of respondents were undecided.
Wet weather over the break was the pet summer holiday peeve of 40 percent of those surveyed, while traffic was most irritating for 20 percent.
Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Rhys Arrowsmith says the survey results demonstrate the mixed feelings of New Zealanders towards moving the summer holiday period.
"Although the weather in February is generally excellent, this year we've been lucky with periods of settled and sunny weather in many parts of the country over the Christmas and New Year period as well," he said.
Climate scientist Jim Sallinger has also suggested moving the school summer holidays to take advantage of better weather.
"The problem is Christmas Day - I'd like to declare it as the 25th of January," Dr Salinger told the Dominion Post.
