Adam Lambert may not have won American Idol but he has risen to massive popularity since coming runner-up last year.
The openly gay pop star keeps making headlines, most recently for his gigs in Malaysia where homosexuality is a crime.
When it comes to American Idol, you would be hard pressed to remember many, if any, of its stars.
Adam Lambert appears to be an exception to that rule – and he didn't even win.
He’s enjoying the ride but “sometimes think the straps should be tighter”.
He made headlines around the world at the American Music Awards when he had a cheeky pash on stage with his keyboard player, who happened to be a male.
It's those sorts of antics that make it tricky when performing in places like Malaysia.
He says performing in New Zealand will be a different experience to Asia.
“It's a very different experience; different cultures, I didn't get out much in Malaysia, just working on the show, and of course a lot of press because of all the hubbub over there,” he says.
“So, just stayed in my hotel room.”
The 28-year-old star has had a massive year touring his record For Your Entertainment – which includes songs written by Lady Gaga and Pink.
Lambert is humble for a chap whose fans include members of Muse and Queen's Brian May.
He's taking it in his own, flamboyant stride; The Times pointing out he's the first openly gay mainstream pop artist to launch a career on a major music label.
Not bad for a runner up.
