Australian and New Zealand cabinet ministers meet in Melbourne (AAP)

John Key and several of his ministers have been meeting with their Australian counterparts in Melbourne.

Politicians from both sides of the Tasman have held a joint cabinet meeting, agreeing to co-operate better on defence issues and criminal history checks.

Australia correspondent Samantha Hayes is in Melbourne.
