Up to 80 family representatives of those lost in the 1979 Erebus crash will have the opportunity to travel back to the scene of the disaster, Air New Zealand announced today.
CEO Rob Fyfe confirmed there will be a second flight to Antarctica this summer, which will be the final chance for family who lost loved ones on November 28 1979.
Mr Fyfe said the airline was determined to create another opportunity following feedback before and after the 30th anniversary commemorations last year, which saw six family representatives travel to Antarctica.
Last year, Air New Zealand and the Government were criticised for not having the capacity to fly all family representatives to Antarctica.
Air New Zealand has been working with the Government, Royal New Zealand Air Force and Antarctica New Zealand to make the second trip possible.
The RNZAF will fly one of its 757s to Scott Base for a day trip, giving family a few hours to experience the unique environment that drew those on flight TE 901 to Erebus almost 31 years ago.
