Air New Zealand flights to England have been delayed after snow and freezing temperatures disrupted services into London Heathrow.

Heavy snow reduced services at the airport, the main gateway into the United Kingdom for long-haul flights, by 50 per cent forcing delays to several Air New Zealand flights.

The departure of NZ38 via Hong Kong, which was scheduled to leave at 10.05am on Sunday (NZT) was pushed back by 15 hours. The scheduled Monday departure on the same route would now not depart until Tuesday morning, an Air New Zealand message said.

An inbound flight, NZ39, which was due to land on Monday morning (NZT), would be delayed by 24 hours, it said.

Flights via Los Angeles were not affected.

Other airlines also suffered delays to their schedules.

Heathrow airport said in a statement it was open and no further snow was expected and its Monday schedule would operate as normal.

However, it warned there may still be delays and cancellations as a result of the snow on Sunday.
