Air New Zealand has been named airline of the year for 2012 by an industry magazine.

Air Transport World says the national carrier won the award for its industry-leading innovation and motivation of its staff.

It says that's resulted in exceptional performances across several areas including customer service, financial performance and safety.

The magazine described Air New Zealand as an industry trendsetter in a number of areas, including product innovation and social media. Judges were also impressed with the airline’s environmental initiatives, including its commitment to operating a very young and highly fuel efficient fleet.

Air New Zealand was also commended for the way in which it had dealt with several natural disasters including the Christchurch earthquakes, and had stepped up to assist the communities that were affected.

QantasLink has won the regional airline of the year award.

It's the second time in three years Air New Zealand has won the magazine's top honours.

Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe says the announcement came as a huge thrill.

“Winning ATW Airline of the Year in 2010 was in my view one of the greatest accolades that had ever been bestowed on Air New Zealand – in our industry it’s equivalent to winning an Oscar. To pick up the award again this year is simply outstanding.”

“For Air New Zealand to again be recognised as the number one airline in competition with the world’s biggest and best airlines is testament to the continued hard work and passion of our 11,500 staff throughout the world,” says Mr Fyfe.

Last year, Air New Zealand won more than 25 awards across the business – including for its innovation, inflight product, design, brand and marketing strength and customer service.

Prime Minister John Key has congratulated the airline on its “outstanding achievement”.

“Air New Zealand is a vital part of our tourism infrastructure.  Often, the first experience incoming visitors have of New Zealand is with the national carrier, and those first impressions count.”

Mr Key said he was very proud of the airline, which was an acknowledgement of the hard work staff and management had put into the company.

@Pinhead and @Dan, I dont know what airlines you guys have flown but Air NZ is near the top of my list. I live in the States and none of the ones over here come even close (both long haul and short haul) The only others that near or are even a little better than Air NZ are Singapore airlines, V Australia and Virgin Atlantic. Great job Air NZ!!
