An Air New Zealand plane that had just taken off from Auckland was struck by lightning around 8pm last night.
Passengers on board reported a large flash and a loud crack.
The plane was not thought to be damaged, but turned back from its Wellington destination to land back in Auckland as a precaution.
Air New Zealand said the plane was undergoing engineering checks in Auckland today.
