Air New Zealand has been named the seventh best airline in the world

Air New Zealand has been named the best airline in the Australia-Pacific region for the second year running at the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The airline has been named the world’s seventh best overall, beating out local competition Qantas and Emirates.

Air NZ also picked up two global awards – ‘World’s Best Premium Economy Class Airline’, and ‘World's Best Premium Economy Class Airline Catering’.

Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said the awards confirmed the quality of product and service available to passengers on Air NZ flights.

Air New Zealand Group General Manager Australasia Airline Bruce Parton says the airline’s “culture of innovation” helped lead them to success.

“These awards reflect incredibly well on the Air New Zealanders who work so hard to deliver a uniquely Kiwi service to our customers every day,” he says.

The awards reflect customer satisfaction levels of front-line product and service across 200 airlines. Over 18.8 million passengers voted in the 2011 awards.

Qantas was second in the Australia-Pacific region and eighth internationally, and Jetstar was third for Australia-Pacific but did not rank in the global top 10.

What's "uniquely Kiwi" about Richard Simmons, David Hasselhoff and Lindsay Lohan? What's "innovative" about an inlight meal service that takes 3 hours? What's award winning about having an award category that's so obscure that it could only be won by default? How does one "shine" by coming 7th?
