Papamoa residents despair as they look over their once pristine beach

This morning local residents once again went to the shore to inspect the damage from Rena.

At Mount Maunganui they were greeted by shipping containers lapping the coastline.

At Papamoa it was oil which washed ashore, staining the beach and, as Kate King discovered, leaving a thick toxic scent of fuel in the air.
