Golliwogs

Golliwogs

Big Boi was in Auckland last night, for a concert that was extremely well received by those who went, and he tweeted up large about being here: McDonald's for a burger, going to Calendar Girls...

But then he posted a photo of Golliwogs for sale.

Golliwogs, which were originally based on the racist and offensive caricatures of African Americans, once so prevalent in American culture, particularly in the South.

And Golliwogs which are for sale in Auckland, as Natasha Utting found a short time ago.

Watch the video.

The first time I saw a Golly was when I was back home in Fiji visiting family. Several members of my family own them and absolutely adore them! They are gorgeous and the joy we take in owning them is innocent of their racist origins. Although we do need to be fighting racism I don't think villainizing those trying to bring new meaning and love to the actions once driven by racism of their ancestors is the answer.

Thank you Brit. I think that needs to be said again and again. Even though the intention isn't racist, the fact is they are reminders to people who suffered through horrific things. I get that most Kiwis are ignorant of the racist symbolism of southern America, but trust me when I say, this is an extremely racist symbol in the US. It would shock any American visitor, who wasn't racist, to see this kind of thing.

About the Golliwog issue, this is crazy. As a tot in the early 50's I did not have a teddy bear, but I did have a Golliwog and I adored him. He was my best buddy!

As a person of US origin, I cringe as do most Americans, even when I hear the word "Negro" - which is still commonplace here. (It is too close to "nigg**")...often said here quite innocently I believe. This word simply disappeared from the American language in the 60's -70's except in historical contexts and was replaced by "black" or African American".

Should we ban white dolls? No of course not. So, we have black and white dolls both. Some people just want to bully others and their choices. Please also, don't let the airport authority bully the shop conceded. I believe they have been made to remove all Golly's from the shop. Note, they are called 'golly' .
