Get ready for the Ireland public relations offensive to begin – and it won’t be the Irish talking themselves up. All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw led the charge when quizzed during the Auckland training camp about the merits of Ireland. Predictably he trotted out the line that he’d never played against a weak Ireland team.

McCaw debuted against Ireland in 2001 in a torrid match at Lansdowne Road that the All Blacks eventually won 40-29 having trailed 7-16 at the break. He’s played them nine more times and, despite a couple of blow outs, the scores have generally been close. The pattern’s usually been that Ireland play with vim and vigour for much of the match but the All Blacks superior fitness, the pace of their game and mental stamina meant they were always able to kick away in the final quarter. The All Blacks know that. They know that if they’re in touch with 20 minutes to go then the Irish will wilt under the pressure.    This year should be no different despite suggestions Leinster’s Heineken Cup win against countrymen Ulster has Ireland poised for a historic win against New Zealand.

Ireland are a good side – their play at last year’s World Cup reinforced that. They have an industrious pack with first class loose forwards and a backline that usually tries to use the ball. Fullback Rob Kearney’s been named Europe’s best player and captain Brian O’Driscoll is a champion midfield back. But his best days are behind him and though he will produce touches of brilliance during the three test series, he will be a rare dash of Irish class.

But that won’t stop the All Blacks and their coaches talking Ireland up. There might even be the odd reprimand from coach Steve Hansen that New Zealanders don’t show Ireland enough rugby respect. Hansen has every right to be a bit nervous. This is his first time in charge and he’s yet to convince the rugby public he’s the right man to be the All Blacks head coach. He knows they need, not just to win, but to win in style. One loss will be unpalatable to most fans – a series defeat and last year’s Stadium of Four Million will be penning Hansen’s letter of resignation for him.

In a rare move Sky TV aren’t broadcasting the naming of Hansen’s 30-strong squad to play Ireland live. Perhaps those who would be involved are pre-booked as the announcement clashes with the 50th birthday celebrations for Sky’s rugby boss, Andrew Fyfe.

Sir Graham Henry’s biography is being penned by Auckland writer Bob Howitt and likely to be released in time for Father’s Day. It’s believed the tome is being compiled in the wee small hours of the morning when the early rising Sir Graham believes he’s at his best.
