A woman who allegedly attempted to abduct a baby from an Auckland hospital after faking a pregnancy for nine months is due to reappear in Manukau District Court on Monday.

Neha Narayan, 24, allegedly tried to take the two-day-old baby from Middlemore Hospital early this month.

She asked her partner to drop her off because she was in labour and spent several hours roaming the hospital's birthing ward.

Hospital staff noticed her behaviour and called police after she allegedly attempted to get into her partner's car with the child.

She has been charged with abduction of a young person and was released on bail when she appeared in Manukau District Court.

The hospital has been reviewing possible security changes.
