New superhero reboot The Amazing Spider-Man has smashed US box office records after raking in a whopping US$35 million in its first 24 hours on release.

The film, which stars on-screen and real-life lovers Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, received positive reviews, prompting fans to hit theatres in droves from midnight on Tuesday, ahead of America's Independence Day holiday on Wednesday.

The impressive box office feat makes The Amazing Spider-Man the biggest Tuesday opener in US history, knocking Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox's 2007 action epic Transformers from the top spot, which had earnings of $27.8 million.

Somewhat surprising given meta critics reviewers give it a so so rating, 41 reviewers give it a average of 66/100.
