A potential ammonia spill at Fonterra’s Whareroa plant in Hawera has caused at least three injuries.

A spokesman for Fonterra say it is unclear at this stage if it was a spill or a leak, but reports say the cause was a cut ammonia line.

Emergency services are at the site of the incident, and have treated three contractors whose injuries are not serious.

The contractors are on their way to accident and emergency for further treatment.

A specialist chemical hazard vehicle is on the way from New Plymouth.

Fonterra is still assessing the severity of the incident, and will release more information soon.
