Jim Anderton is not letting the Christchurch earthquake affect his Mayoral ambitions

By Duncan Garner

Jim Anderton has never suffered from a crisis of confidence. Nor does he do fake modesty.

Asked how he could justify being the Mayor of Christchurch and a local MP at the same time, he suggested it would be so easy he could do it “standing on his head”.

What an ego! But now he's been well and truly caught out and his reluctant backdown has begun.

He now says he will quit as Wigram MP if he wins the mayoralty. Big deal. It's too late Jim. It's taken Anderton nine days since the earthquake to get to this position. The truth is the mayoralty was, and always will be a full time job.

And Anderton's now recognising that. But the political damage has been done. He's been too slow.

Rightly, Anderton gave Mayor Bob Parker his space after the earthquake - he really had no option otherwise. But Anderton has dithered over the past few days about whether or not to change his stance on staying on as an MP as well as Mayor, should he get elected.

I always thought his position of refusing to quit Parliament left him exposed. And so the day has arrived.

It looked greedy and egotistical - even if he was willing to donate the salary. And now it's all come home to roost. Bob Parker has looked measured, caring and approachable. He has started a job that he will now ask his voters to let him finish. He should be judged in three years time.

Anderton is also likely to get nailed by Parker now - after early polls showed him ahead. But Parker, in my view, deserves to stay in office - he deserves to finish this huge job.

There's no doubt Anderton has had a long and distinguished career. His greatest achievement is the establishment of Kiwibank.

His Progressive 'Party' will collapse once he leaves. He has no desire to see anyone build on his legacy. The party is Jim, Jim is the party. As the Alliance found - there is no room for anyone else. His party, if you can even call it that, has morphed into the Labour Party anyway. His previous Progressive candidates now carry Labour Party membership cards. Look at this: Josie Pagani wants Labour's nomination for Mana in the upcoming by-election, but she's working in Anderton's office right now. Her husband works for Labour at a very high level. The Progressives don't really exist.

Anyway, back to my main point. It's Anderton's position of wanting to hold two public offices and draw two public salaries at the same time that was unsustainable. It's caught up on him. Big time.

The fact he wasn't nimble enough to spot it days ago - shows he's not as in touch with the needs of Christchurch post this earthquake, as he should be.

He should consider pulling out now - and let Parker run uncontested. That would be gracious. Does Anderton have it in him? I doubt it. But watch this space.

I know I'm arguing against democracy but will the city be any worse off without Jim? Hardly. Only in his own mind.

And the last thing the locals down there need right now are wannabe mayors bitching at each other. Go quietly Jim. Go with your head held high. You've had a stellar career.

whenever I read blogs from out of towners predicting Jims demise i have to larf. You guys dont get it because you havent understood the amount of grassroots work Anderton does and you obviously havent heard about the number of fiascos Parker has initiated. Do I want the architect of Kiwibank for Mayor or the architect of the Henderson Property purchase, and the Civic building blowout and the... go figger!

The rest of the clowns who voted for the bailout along with their LEADER to pay top dollar for property that would have devalued considerably if left to the market, should also shown the exit. Even the most favourable assessment of the deal would conclude it was dumb leading the dumb.

Rob you got any idea how the council works? At all? Bob was one vote, maybe you should check who on the coucil voted for some of this stuff and then comment. Parker may have been mayor when this stuff that so excites you happened but he was one vote and let's face it we still have the asset, it is tangible.

This is all about best man for the job.....now! Jim has dreams of things gone past and as Duncan says "He HAD a stellor career" He is not a credible choice at this time at his age and with his history.

Look out - the Progressive Party's socialist drones have clearly been mobilised to crush dissenting views on the comments board. Don't you have anything better to do?

There are 17 million reasons why Bob Parker should not be mayor of Christchurch. This is the amount of ratepayer dollars he used to bail out the failed property developer Dave Henderson. Its more than a bit ironic how a journalist like yourself Duncan, who was personally frothing at the mouth during the parliamentary expenses scandal, can turn a blind eye to Parker's extremely poor use of public funds. Another example of a mainstream journalist going for style over substance.

Ah Bob Roberts, well done. The posts tend to indicate the choices made over the past 3 years are all Bob and not the council. The choices at this moment are a 72 year old who has had his run or someone who can lead a team at this very moment in life. The crazy posts that Jim came and helped a family are just crap. Imagine what would have happened to the city if he had done this piecemeal interference all over! You are right, get priorities and address them and the city centre is very important as are all the services.

Jim is just plain past it, he is an individual not a leader and he has failed to recognise this (a failing with us old folk!) I don't like Bob particularly but he is the only runner at this time.

I am amazed at the comments of the people who post, find out how a city is run before you make numb nut comments, The mayor has one vote, do you not get it, they can’t do anything without the majority of Councillors voting the same way. Parker can converse with councillors Jim is bully evidence by previous politcal tantrums. Civil Defence emergencies are called by the Mayor but handled by a team, there is no favouritism just an assessment of risk to public, health etc, and the central city employs how many people? They want to get back to work to get paid to pay rent mortgages, food etc so the central city is important if you want a recovery the Civil Defence team are doing a great job to provide for the long term recovery of Christchurch. We need a Mayor who understands this Bob does, Jim doesn’t and the labour committee members posting are really having some difficulty, so form a committee and let Jim tell you what to think, there is no alternative than to vote Bob.
