Animal welfare group Safe is pushing for the government to bring a swift end to the practice of sow crates.

It comes fifteen months after conditions in a Levin piggery put the controversial factory farming method in the spotlight.

Safe spokesperson Hans Kriek says the farm still uses the restricting crates, and conditions are only getting worse for the pigs.

He says Agriculture Minister David Carter needs to abolish the practice.

MAF last year cleared the Levin piggery of any animal cruelty charges.

Please, SAFE are not "Animal Rights", they focus on "welfare reforms". Its even mentioned in the text body, was this title just to create tension?
