Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says today’s Christchurch zoning decisions have been “among the most challenging” carried out so far.
Of the 255 orange-zoned properties whose fates were announced today, only 42 have been made green – less than 20 percent. The other 213 have been red-zoned, Fairfax reported.
The red-zoned properties were in Avonside, Burwood, Dallington and Wainoni.
Another 653 properties remain in the orange zone, but Mr Brownlee says the re-zoning has now reached “the final stretch”.
“After what has been a long and anxious process for those waiting for decisions we're now into the final stretch of re-zoning properties in the residential orange zone.”
He says the remaining decisions are “finer and more complex than previous decisions, which is why they haven't been announced sooner”, but stressed that the bulk of the geotechnical and other expert works have been completed.
The remainder of the properties will be re-zoned “in the coming weeks”, he says.
Assessments of more than 2,000 white-zoned homes have yet to be completed. Mr Brownlee says residents of these homes “have not been forgotten”.
