I am surprised how closed minded people are. The excerpts below from a government site http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/pets/2 indicate that exotic animals could have been bought to New Zealand as war mascots or as personal collections before regulations were in place. "Pet animals came to New Zealand from various parts of the world. The crews of vessels often carried cats and dogs to control vermin on board, and for companionship and entertainment. These animals bred, and some may have jumped ship at New Zealand ports. Some settlers of the 1840s and 1850s brought pets with them, and wealthy people sometimes travelled with their pets. Exotic pets such as monkeys were brought to New Zealand both by acclimatisation societies and individuals, as there were no restrictions on the import of such animals until 1895. In more recent times, pet animals have had to go through tests, and often quarantine, when imported." "During the New Zealand wars of the 1860s some British regiments had animal mascots. In the first and second world wars, New Zealand troops overseas continued this practice. Organisations such as fire brigades, brass bands and sports clubs also often had mascots."

There are large cats in the back country right through the south island by they are nothing but over grown feral cats that have got big on hares and rabbits. I have had a large black object dart past me up mount Harper way in a dry river bed and to this day I don't know what it was a large cat or pig but there has been sightings of a large cat there as well before.

My husband & I stopped in to see a friend in Kaikoura 2 weeks ago. He showed us a cat that they caught & trapped in a possum trap. It was hanging up next to a 100 pound pig, and would have been about half of that. Now I wish I had taken photos of it, after seeing last nights show. This thing was huge. Black & looked like a Puma. The fangs on it were about an inch long.

there have been many sightings of animals such as this check out this . Im surprised no one has been in touch regarding this. There have been feral cats up to 14 kg found in this aree but also a surprising amount of evidence for a few species of big cat in this area. Please report any sightings to the New Zealand Centre for Fortean Zoology. http://nzcryptozoologist0.tripod.com/
