The once-loved Trade and Exchange newspaper has published its last edition today, marking the end of an era for the classified.

Launched in 1981 by Peter and Jill Witmore, the Auckland edition was the first free advertising paper in New Zealand, and spawned other versions across the country.

Mr Witmore, who still manages the company, says at its peak of popularity people would get up early and wait outside shops to get the first read.

Trade and Exchange listings will now be done exclusively on their internet site te.co.nz.
