Police investigating the death of an Auckland
security guard say they would dearly love to have "something solid" to
present the man's mother when she arrives from India later this month.
But
at this stage the death of Charanpreet Singh Dhaliwal at a Henderson
construction site in November remains largely a mystery.
"Unfortunately
there are still a lot of unknowns," Detective Senior Sergeant Stan
Brown of Waitakere CIB told NZ Newswire on Monday.
"What happened, how, who it involved and other circumstances, a lot of that is still unclear."
Mr
Dhaliwal, 22, was beaten while working his first shift at the
construction site near the Lincoln Road-Northwestern Motorway
interchange, about 15km west of downtown Auckland.
His body was discovered at the scene by early shift workers.
Police
say the site had been targeted by scrap metal thieves in the weeks
before the attack but it was unclear whether they had anything to do
with the death.
His mother is expected to arrive from India in the
coming weeks seeking answers to the death of her son, who had been
living in New Zealand for two years.
"We'll obviously be meeting
with her and briefing her with where we're at ... so it would be nice to
have something solid to tell her," Det Sen Sgt Brown said.
Before
Christmas, investigators released an identikit image of one of four men
known to have been in the area around the time of the assault.
Police
received a few calls but are still yet to get the names or details of
the Polynesian men, who are understood to have been refused admission to
the nearby Lovebirds Gentlemen's Club earlier in the night.
"We still don't know their involvement but there's a chance they could be our number one witnesses," the officer said.
Mr Dhaliwal's body was returned to India last month.
