Next month world leaders will meet to confront climate change in Copenhagen and they in turn will be confronted with new evidence about how urgently they need to act.

The latest assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released in 2007, but this week came new data to back it up.

A new warning shows things are getting worse for the millions facing rising sea levels, drought and water shortage.

The study was the most robust of its kind, compiled by 500 authors, condensing the work of tens of thousands of scientists - which was then reviewed by 2500 experts.

Scientists now say not only was it correct, new data on the loss of Antarctic ice sheets shows they are melting at the fastest end of the scale predicted.

New satellite data from Antarctica and Greenland have been added to IPCC projections and show that instead of a 59cm sea level rise in the next 100 years -we can expect 75 -190cm.

One hundred and thirty countries including New Zealand have committed to try and limit global warming to two degrees.

Andy Reisinger who coordinated the summary of the IPCC report says it's a plausible goal, if action is taken now.

But the result still won't be pretty.

“We shouldn't forget that even with two degrees, millions and millions of people will be negatively affected by water shortages and a rise in sea level.

The Copenhagen summit charged with containing the potential catastrophe is already in trouble, with UN leaders openly saying the only thing everyone agrees on, is that there won't be a general agreement.

John Key has said New Zealand’s target of reducing emissions by 10 to 20 percent is up there with the OECD developed countries.

However Reisinger has said we need to reduce emissions by 25 – 40 percent below 1990 levels - or go above two degrees and suffer the rising consequences.

There were several major meltwater pulses between 20000 and 8000 years ago. Sea level rise rates of up to 100m in 500yrs, peaking at up to a foot per year rise. Of course we have increased greenhouse gases and triggered rates of temp rise that are 1000x more than anything in millions of years. The PETN event 50 million years ago is the only known event of simular size increase in atmospheric carbon as we have already achieved in 200 years. But that was over a 20000 year period. And boosted global temps by over 20F. We are heading for no Ice on the earth, and over 300ft higher sealevels. It will happen at far faster rates than anyone is yet admitting. All we don't know is when the rapid change period will really begin, and exactly how fast the change will be. Its looking like very soon indeed and much faster than anything in millions of years are fair answers to those ones.

The people (naive one's) who will believe anything thrown in front of them might as well re-read the Old & New Testaments and agree that the earth is around 8000 yrs old.
Remember, the Dark Ages all come from the Christian’s total belief in this sort of trash The Churches ruled with iron fists murdering people who were slightly different (for one excuse or another) with their beloved Hyena like Politicians pillaging money off the naive believing peasants while being rich and powerful with their buddies.
After all, there was a post on here a few months ago regarding Al Gore’s unfounded propaganda, to which someone referring to it as her new bible!!!

A denialist is someone who is not sceptical of the proposition that the scientific consensus is a global conspiracy, if only in the area of climate change (and maybe also biology). A lot of denialists call themselves sceptics. To do that is to pile misrepresentation on top of arrogant stupidity.

I'm Mr.Blerim Ademi from Kosovo.
These are very real and rescue the population are in Russia and Canada.
The world has an estimated 5 billion people close to 4 billion people will die but will live again 1 billion people in the world. These are the true from the science of high time a few centuries.

Really, surely this is now more about political bullying (to reach the Copenhagen dead-line) then it is about science!!!

New made-up data, The facts are that the whole ice area has stayed the same even the IPPC have said that, so what, it melts in summer!. when are these crooks who want to bankrupt every hard working person on earth stop smoking this BS.

What's the big deal? Global temperatures haven't gone up since 1998 and in the past couple of years temperatures have started to fall - despite rising levels of atmospheric carbon. The IPCC refers to scientific opinion as though there is some scientific consensus. What a joke. 31,000 scientists including 9000 PhD's signed a petition denying man is responsible for global warming. This is all about research grants and carbon credits - carbon credits being the next big derivative market and its the average man that is going to pay - through the nose. Oh and incidentally the Antarctic ice melt during the Antarctic summer (October-January) of 2008-2009 was the lowest ever recorded in the satellite history. ( in the journal Geophysical Research Letters by Marco Tedesco and Andrew Monaghan) – but that didn't get reported did it.

Wow 3000 people worked this up, it MUST be true.
Well true or not this finding does not in anyway
prove that manmade co2 emissions are its cause.
The whole emissions reduction idea is based on
the as yet unproven claim that mans activities
are the main driver of global warming.
Lets see a proof of this which is accepted by all
scientists, not just those whose have made careers
out of promoting it.

Ho Hum more doom and gloom. Ive owned a wharf for 20 years and Im sure the level of the sea hasnt changed by a noticable amount in that time so there cant be two many people finding there homes disappearing below the waves.
