A team of Australian medics has flown from Christchurch to Antarctica this morning to help with a medical evacuation at the United States base.
An Airbus A319 carrying six people and equipment took off at around 8am bound for McMurdo base where the Americans are located.
They're expected to land on the ice at around 2pm.
The type of emergency is uncertain. It is understood the patient is in a stable condition but needs to be evacuated for further medical care, which could involve urgent surgery.
