On November 13 the small seaside town of Aramoana 33-year-old David Gray went on a killing spree after an argument with a neighbour.

Using a scoped semi-automatic rifle he managed to kill thirteen people including his neighbours, a family visiting the township and the local police sergeant Stewart Guthrie who was the first to respond to reports.

Police conducted a house-by-house search and found Gray the next day. He was shot dead as he exited the house shooting from the hip.

It was the largest one-off shooting in New Zealand’s history.

I first heard the news on Nightline when Joanne Paul announced that a man had killed six in the small seaside town. Shame the toll ended up much higher. I returned later the next day from a forestry course I started on to find the Police had shot Mr. Gray dead. Shame for his family, since he was unbalanced, and some people had not treated him right either. Trouble is, these people take it out on the innocent, not those who wronged them. A lesson from this is to treat everyone we meet the way we would like to be treated. I remember Aramoana from the furore over the smelter, and now I shall never forget it.
