There is one fundamental problem with Judith Collins argument, Police are being hijacked by offenders! Look at the facts of the recent Police shootings that have occurred. The problem has simply been that Police did not have access when required. This is handguns available on their belt. It does not matter how prepared, skilled or experienced you are. When an offender shoots at them without warning or reason, they will die. Case closed.

Well there should be some police that has a 1 gun or 1 gun and 1 tazer !
But they shoud really carefull with it becuause there can be some serial damage to some of those really special people but the police should have a least one gun and one tazer.

There was a Doco about Australian's having a pistol and that they haven't had a death in 8yrs. They didn't tell us How many people the accidently Gunned down or Killed. I agree with the phone calls and vests that other people have mentioned. There's way too many criminals from overseas that are here that are bringing there habbits and passing it on to the younger Kiwi Generation.

why not give them bullet proof vests instead of just stab proof ones and let them carry and operate the teasers at there discretion and have a shoty in the car for if it goes bad

The Police should have phone the people first before going knocking on anyones door, they should know better than going knocking on doors without authorizations..
The Police should phone first before knocking on any doors, well that is how its supposed to be before going out knocking on doors, they are hatred for the police out there for what ever reason, i know idea..

As it stands an officer has to justify strapping on a taser to take it to an incident, this has to also be approved by the officers hierarchy, does the Police minister expect the same?

The officers who got shot were doing a door knock on the neighbours house simply to ask if they'd seen the person whom they were looking for and then it went bad.

There is no point having the guns or tasers sitting in the patrol car and i don't see any way out of this but to arm the Police. Sure some will say but this will make the crimes carry guns... it too late, they already are!

Definitely not. Huge over-reaction to arm 100% of cops for situations that might arise max 5% of the time. No guarantee it would change the outcome for the few police who have been attacked, but will change forever and for the worse the relationship between police and the public. Any escalation of gun culture is a big step in totally the wrong direction. Surely we should put much more training, technology and whatever else it takes into getting the cops proficient with tasers and the like before going down the American road, where it's achieved nothing but massive numbers of gun deaths. It's a neanderthal Lethal Weapon solution, there'd be no going back, and I have a very strong feeling it would increase police shootings instead of decrease.

We have a police Minister getting payed large wages, plus all the extas that goes with the Job,and she is unable to solve the question do cops need to be armed,She has been overseas too find this out but still missing the answers. The Aussie cops have been armed for years, all she had to do, Email over the ditch too find that out, without trips to America and other places on the tax payers.I myself they sat on the fence for a long time without a holiday on the tax payers, now they are government they are using every opportunity that comes along for a trip, even just too see if it gets dark at night time.Even For Bennett to have gone too America too find out why our unemployment was going up?
