The army has been called out to help bring a massive blaze under control at a coal yard near Christchurch.

Fire crews are mopping up after an explosion at Kenroll Industrial Coal in Rolleston.

Fire Communications shift manager, Riwai Grace, says they were called to the scene just before four o'clock, where it took six crews to put the “very impressive” fire down.

“They could see the flames well quite some distance away, so they said it looked quite spectacular.”

Fire Safety is investigating.
