Police have made an arrest after a Bull Terrier cross was found abandoned and shot in the head near the Waimakariri River.

A 24-year-old Hornby man has been charged with reckless ill-treatment of a dog, after information from the public linked him to the August 6 incident.

The dog was found tied to a post on the banks of the Waimakariri River, having been shot in the head multiple times. The dog was alive but later had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.

SPCA launched a public appeal for information to assist with their investigation, as the dog had no means of identification. A search warrant was executed at a Hornby address on August 31 and charges subsequently laid.

The accused will appear in Christchurch District Court on October 6.

Seriously what is wrong with people!? He could have just taken the dog to the SPCA if he didn't want it!! Instead he drags it to the river and tries to kill it himself.. and can't even do that properly. He deserves decent jail time for the cruelty and the public should know who he is.. one of us might take him for a trip to the Waimak..

Please give this man a decent sentence like the good judge did in the seal murder case. It is wonderful to see real justice happening for the animals at long last!!!

I have been waiting to see whether the scum that shot this poor dog would be caught. Hopefully a good stint in jail will deter him from doing it again!
