Whitney Houston died at the very hotel where she had been due to perform and on the eve of the Grammys where, at her peak, she reigned as a six-time winner.

Police confirm an autopsy has now been completed and that the singer was found in the bath. Prescription medication was also in the room.

As her body was removed from the scene her only child, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina became distraught and was treated briefly in hospital.

Houston’s comeback may have been a distant dream but she will be remembered for a voice few would deny was one of a kind.

Rapper LL Cool J paid tribute to the singer at the Grammys.

“This is music's biggest night, to celebrate and to remember, [which is] never more true than it is tonight.

“Whitney – we will always love you.”

The singer and actress dominated the pop charts by selling millions of records and influencing some of the biggest selling artists in the world; many of whom have paid tribute to her at the awards.

Her death, which came far too soon, is certainly her most tragic headline of all.
