A spokesman for the Sri Lankan community says he has serious doubts about 85 asylum seekers wanting to come to New Zealand. A group of Sri Lankan asylum seekers are currently on a ship anchored off the Indonesian island of Bintan, near Singapore.

The United Sri Lankan Association's Dr Chula Rajapakse says he's suspicious of the group's credibility.

“I wouldn’t know for sure but I would have my serious doubts really, I mean this is not the first time we had groups like this coming in and I think, one feels really sorry for people who are really the meat in the sandwich, who are really being manipulated by people who are really people smugglers,” he says.

Dr Rajapakse says New Zealand shouldn't be considered a soft touch, and believes some among the group of asylum seekers may have links to, or be members of, Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tiger militant movement and should protect themselves.

“Amongst these people might be people who have inclinations for terrorism, and Sri Lanka has suffered a lot from these Tigers and right now their movement is very active internationally, and it seems coincidental that this group should appear at a time when there is so much propaganda activities from [them],” he says.

Anyone who thinks NZ isn't a racist country should read the comments on this article. This appalling piece of journalism omits any mention of conditions in Tamil concentration camps in Sri Lanka, quotes someone who has no idea about the validity of the asylum requests (similar groups in Australia had a 90% rate of refugee status), and brings up the boogey-man figure of people smugglers (despite no evidence of people-smugglers being involved). Who are you going to ask for opinions from next - Kyle Chapman? I'm sure he has some equally well-thought out opinions.

What a blanket statement of Dr Chula Rajapase to brand some of the asylum seekers having inclination towards terrorism.

In the eyes of the agents of State Terrorism, any Tamil is a terrorist. It is over two years since the war was brought to an end and what we see in Sri Lanka is an extension of the war to state terrorism of the military/intelligence and Tamil para-military forces against Tamil civilan population.

I ask for a public debate with the rabid Chaula on the issue and I will produce real victims of the nasty Gestapo type of state terroism that this man is trying to hide behind.

These hard-left Tamil political activists have to be prevented from becoming NZ citizens. Craig's comment below about the growth of the Islamic community is a staggering statistic. NZ has a small population and population density is quite low. If there is an influx of people from a particualar ethnic background, they will become a force at the ballot box very quickly. Just ask the Canadians and the Brits how their democracy is becoming increasingly corrupted by the voting patterns of various minority groups. Democratic governence only works if the voting public elects MPs on the basis of, and holds them accountable on, their intentions and ability to govern in the interests of their electorate and country. It is increasingly the case in Canda and Britain in particular, that MPs are given incentive to neglect their contituency whilst representing the interests of some minority ethnics in a far off land. There are few Western nations that will face some serious issues a few decades down the line, I think.

We are told by some fool that NZ has to accept political refugees. The thing is if we let these people, and later their extended families, come into NZ.They stay at the Mangere Refugee Camp.Whilst there they are taken by mini bus to the local WINZ office to go on a benefit. And then it's unlikely they will work for the rest of their lives as they enjoy being on the WINZ bandwagon.
And then we do not know of their backgrounds. They are Tamils and I believe Tamils are trouble. Why import into NZ more trouble-makers?We have enough here already.

No fighting in Sri Lanka for two years. As to NZ only taking 750 a year the actually number is closer to 2000 once you taken the "family" reunions policy. This has contributed to NZ's islamic community quadrupling in two years.
